It is the second Tuesday of the month which means it is patch day over at Microsoft. The Redmond based company has released a total of four security bulletins that month. One bulletin has received a maximum severity rating of critical, while the three others one of important. The critical vulnerability addresses a issue in the Bluetooth stack that could allow remote code execution. Affected are only Microsoft Windows Vista and Windows 7, and not Windows XP or earlier operating systems.

Two of the three remaining vulnerabilities address issues in the Windows operating system as well. Security bulletin MS11-054 describes a vulnerability in Windows Kernel-Mode drivers that could allow elevation of privileges, while bulletin MS11-056 a vulnerability in the Windows Client and Server run-time subsystem.

All supported Microsoft client and server operating systems are affected by the two security vulnerabilities. The last issue is a vulnerability in Microsoft Visio.

Here is an overview of all four security bulletins with links to their pages at the Microsoft Technet website.

* MS11-053 – Vulnerability in Bluetooth Stack Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2566220)
* MS11-054 – Vulnerabilities in Windows Kernel-Mode Drivers Could Allow Elevation of Privilege (2555917)
* MS11-056 – Vulnerabilities in Windows Client/Server Run-time Subsystem Could Allow Elevation of Privilege (2507938)
* MS11-055 – Vulnerability in Microsoft Visio Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2560847)

The patches are as usual already available via Windows Update, Microsoft Update and via the Microsoft Download Center. The monthly exploit mitigation guide at the Technet Security blog provides additional information about the vulnerabilities and deployment strategies.

Probably the easiest way to deploy the security updates to a single system is via Windows Update.

Just click on Start > All Programs > Windows Update to open the update screen. You may need to click on Check for updates on the left sidebar if your computer has been up for some time and the updates are not displayed directly in the main window.

Has been released.

An additional flaw within a side query that is used in the search UI has recently been discovered. This is further to a previous patch that was issued. This flaw may enable malicious individuals to inject sql that would allow you to run arbitrary queries on the db via this exploit. To resolve this issue, it has been necessary to release a patch level version on all versions of vBulletin 4.X. The issue does not affect vBulletin 3.X to the best of our knowledge. We are not aware of a website that has been compromised by this flaw.

The upgrade process is the same as previous patch level releases – simply download the patch from the Members Area, extract the files and upload to your webserver, overwriting the existing files. There is no upgrade script required.

As with all security-based releases, we recommend that all customers upgrade as soon as possible in order to prevent any potential damage resulting from the flaw being exploited.

Upgrading from 4.X

If you are already running 4.X, the process you will be required to follow to make your board immune to this flaw is very simple.

Visit the Patches section of the vBulletin Members’ Area and download the patch for the version you are using, then extract the files from the archive you downloaded, then upload the files to your board via FTP etc., overwriting the existing files. This will update your version to the PL release.

After more than a million downloads of WordPress 3.2, we’re now releasing WordPress v3.2.1 into the wild. This maintenance release fixes a server incompatibility related to JSON that’s unfortunately affected some of you, as well as a few other fixes in the new dashboard design and the Twenty Eleven theme. If you’ve already updated to 3.2, then this update will be even faster than usual, thanks to the new feature in 3.2 that only updates files that have been changed, rather than replacing all the files in your installation.

The steps needed to upgrade WHMCS can vary from version to version and so full steps, including any template changes required for each version are included in the Release Notes below. However, the general process for upgrading always remains the same:

1. Begin by downloading the latest version of WHMCS, either from our client area here
2. Next, unzip the contents of the latest WHMCS zip file download to a folder on your computer
3. Now remove the /images/logo.jpg file to avoid overwriting your customised logo image
4. Next if you have customised your WHMCS admin folder name, you should rename the admin folder in the new files to match
5. Upload the new files to your existing installation folder overwriting any existing files
6. Visit the admin area as you normally would to login and you should then see the upgrade script
7. Accept the license agreement
8. Now take a full backup of your database using a tool such as phpMyAdmin
9. Tick to confirm you have backed up your database and click the upgrade button
10. Once the updates finish, delete the install folder from your server
11. Now proceed to update your custom templates with any new or changed files in the version you’ve upgraded to. These are listed in the Template Changes section of our Release Notes (see below).

WHMCS announced the release of WHMCS V4.5.2.

As is normal with all major updates, this update 4 weeks after the initial release is a roll up of all the changes and fixes that have been made and distributed since the initial V4.5 stable was announced last month. It contains both bug fixes and improvements from the initial feedback we’ve received from you all. A changelog will be posted below shortly.

As this is a file based update only, no database upgrades are required and therefore no install/upgrade script. It’s simply a case of downloading the new files and uploading them to your installation. The version number in your system will then update automatically.

To aid and simplify upgrading, we have created 2 different downloads – there’s the full version to be used for all new installations and upgrades from any version earlier than V4.5.1, and an incremental version which only includes folders and templates which have changed, to make incremental updating a quicker & simpler process.

These are both available from the My Licenses section of the client area as usual to download at our Download Center

Security Patch Notice: V4.5.2 also includes the security patch we announced on Monday here so if you upgrade to V4.5.2, you do not need to apply that patch separately again.
